ASMBS / IFSO Revised Indications for Bariatric Metabolic Surgery (2022)

  • All patients with BMI >35

  • Patients with BMI >30 and metabolic disease

  • Asian and other high risk ethnic group patients with BMI >27.5 and metabolic disease

Laboratory Monitoring After Bariatric Surgery

We suggest that patients who have had bariatric surgery should have the following testing performed 6-monthly for 18 months and annually thereafter:

  • Full Blood Count

  • Urea, Electrolytes, Creatine

  • Liver Function Test

  • Micronutrients as per the adjacent table

If a deficiency is found, increased supplementation should be prescribed and the repeat testing interval should be shortened.
